What You'll Need
- Replacement vinyl exam table cover (model-specific)
- Heavy-duty staple gun (3/8" staples)
- Flathead screwdriver or staple remover
- Scissors or utility knife
- Pliers (optional)
Step 1: Remove the Old Cover
Flip the table top section over or access the underside. Use a staple remover or flathead screwdriver to pull out all existing staples around the perimeter. Work slowly to avoid tearing the foam underneath. Once all staples are removed, peel the old vinyl away.
Inspect the foam. If it's compressed, cracked, or has an odor, replace it before installing the new cover. Replacement foam is available at most upholstery supply stores.
Step 2: Position the New Cover
Lay the new vinyl cover face-down on a clean flat surface. Center the table cushion on top, foam-side down. Ensure there's 3–4 inches of vinyl on all sides for wrapping and stapling.
Step 3: Staple the Cover
Start at the center of one long edge. Pull the vinyl firmly over the edge and place your first staple. Work outward toward the corners, alternating sides to keep tension even. Pull firmly — the vinyl should be smooth and taut on the top surface with no wrinkles.
For the footrest section (if applicable), repeat the same process. The pull-out footrest is a separate piece and should be covered independently.
Step 4: Handle the Corners
Corners are the trickiest part. Fold the vinyl neatly like wrapping a gift — fold one side in first, then the other, and staple flat. Trim any excess bulk with scissors before stapling to keep it clean.
Step 5: Inspect and Reinstall
Flip the cushion over and inspect the top surface. It should be smooth, tight, and wrinkle-free. Reinstall the cushion onto the table frame. Most Midmark Ritter table tops attach with a few bolts or simply rest in place.
