How to Staple On a Bar Stool Cover in 5 Steps
What You'll Need
- Your new National Seat Covers bar stool replacement cover
- A staple gun (heavy-duty, 3/8" staples recommended)
- A flathead screwdriver or staple remover
- Scissors
- 5–10 minutes
Step 1: Remove the Old Cover
Flip the stool upside down. Use a flathead screwdriver or staple remover to pull out the existing staples holding the old cover in place. Peel the old vinyl away from the seat cushion and discard it.
Step 2: Position the New Cover
Center your new vinyl cover face-down on a flat surface. Place the seat cushion face-down on top of it, centered. Make sure there's an even amount of vinyl overhang on all sides — typically 2–3 inches.
Step 3: Staple the First Two Sides
Pull the vinyl snugly over one edge and staple it to the underside of the seat, placing staples every 2–3 inches. Then pull the opposite side taut and staple it the same way. Keep the tension even to avoid wrinkles on the top surface.
Step 4: Do the Corners
Corners are the trickiest part. Fold the vinyl neatly — like wrapping a gift — and staple the folds flat against the underside. Take your time here for the cleanest result.
Step 5: Staple the Remaining Two Sides
Pull and staple the final two sides, working from the center outward on each side. Check the top surface as you go to make sure it's smooth and wrinkle-free. Trim any excess vinyl with scissors if needed.
That's It — You're Done
Flip the stool right-side up and admire your work. A properly stapled cover should look tight, smooth, and professional — indistinguishable from a factory finish.
